The Co Lao, one of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups, has about 4,000 people. The group now mainly resides in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang. The Co Lao ethnic has branched into smaller groups, including Red Co Lao, Green Co Lao and White Co Lao. Red Co Lao people mainly live in villages of 15 to 20 families in Hoang Su Phi and Yen Minh districts in Ha Giang province. Red Co Lao ethnic utilise their natural surroundings that have fertile hills and valleys to grow rice. Green and White Co Lao ethnics, on the other hand, live in Dong Van and Meo Vac districts and grow their crops on rocky hills.
