Artisan Nguyen Thi Dan, who has reached a rare age of 101 years old this year, is the oldest tea artisan in Quang Ba ward, Tay Ho district of Hanoi. She started making lotus-scented tea in her 20s. West Lake lotus season falls between May and June each year, marking a busy time for the artisan’s family, who upholds the tradition of making lotus tea. The lotus scent carries the essence of heaven and earth, so lotus-infused tea is considered a precious item and was historically reserved only for noble families. Vietnam is full of lotus flowers, but the best ones are from West Lake in Hanoi, also known as Back Diep (hundreds petals) lotus, with its strong floral scent and its hundreds of large and small petals that hug the yellow anther. Family of artisan Nguyen Thi Dan preserves the traditional making of lotus-infused tea by a complete manual process using freshly picked lotus flowers from West Lake. West Lake lotus tea is considered the quintessence of Vietnamese tea, earning its status as a special Hanoi delicacy. VNA Photo: Khánh Hòa
