The Aza festival is a long-standing practice of Pa Co – Ta Oi ethnic community in the central province of Thua Thien – Hue. It is a traditional custom to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one while paying respect and gratitude for gods, for favourable weather conditions and bumper crops for the upcoming year. Traditionally, the Aza festival usually kicks off on the sixth day of the eleventh lunar month and lasts until the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. The Aza festival has two types, one is the annually held Aza Kan, the other is held every five years and is called Aza Koonh, with the latter having more rituals with complex organization.
