Xoe Dance, which has become Vietnam’s 14th Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recognized by UNESCO, is a unique traditional dance art of the Thai ethnic minority people living mainly in four northern mountainous provinces of Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La. Muong Lo district (Yen Bai province), Muong So district (Lai Chau province), Muong Lay district and Dien Bien Phu city (Dien Bien province), and Thuan Chau district (Son La province) are considered the centers of Xoe. Comprising about 30 different dances, Xoe Thai art is performed with fan, scarf or conical hat and is associated with important community ceremonies such as festivals, Tet (New Year) celebrations, weddings, funarals and other cultural exchanges of Thai people. As a traditional dance, Xoe Thai involves people holding hands and performing six traditional acts, including welcoming, clapping hands, waving scarves, and offering wine. The dance not only presents the beauty of Thai ethnic culture, but also the connection between community members, and it is considered as a symbol of hospitality of Thai people. VNA Photo
