Truc Chi is a type of traditional paper art reinvigorated in Hue by artist Phan Hai Bang and his collaborators in 2012. “Truc” means bamboo, while “Chi” means paper in Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary, a term coined by writer Buu Y, which highlights the origin of the new art - bamboo pulp. This type of paper is not just simple paper, but they are unique pieces of art created during the paper making process. These papers are made with bamboo pulp and other plant pulps, such as straws, banana trees, leaves or even grass, to give them varying degrees of colour and create “gradients” for each paper. Then, artists cut out different shapes and frames to “shape” each paper. The most important step comes during the forming of the paper, where artists use the shapes & water pressure to create the art piece with depth and gradients. This process is named “TrucChigraphy”. The result is a stunning flat paper art with depth and dimensions, extremely suitable for light decorations such as conical hats, lanterns, or lamps. Over the past 10 years, artist Phan Hai Bang and his collaborators have worked hard to bring Truc Chi art papers to the masses and developed it to become a new traditional art of Vietnamese paper.
