These days, as the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival is approaching, craft people in the Hoi An traditional lantern making village in the central province of Quang Nam have become more bustling to complete their products in preparation for the biggest festival of the year. If you are looking for a souvenir from Hoi An ancient city, a traditional lantern is a perfect one. The lantern making craft has been last for over four centuries in Hoi An. Currently, about 40 households with 160 members are involved in this craft. Hoi An lanterns are made from bamboo frames covered with cloth, such as flax and silk, embellishing colours of the products. Since 1988, Hoi An city authorities have encouraged households, temples, shrines and pagodas to turn off electricity and lighten with lanterns instead in every 15th day of each lunar month, creating a unique tourist attraction for the city and helping boost the lantern making craft.
