After six days of competition, Vietnam’s athletic team netted 22 gold medals out of the 47 sets of athletic medals at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31), retaining the country’s top position in the sport. On May 19, the last day of athletic competition at SEA Games 31, Vietnamese athletes won 3 more gold medals. Hoang Nguyen Thanh brought home a gold from the 42.195km men's marathon race, the first of its kind for Vietnam, while Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc and Vo Xuan Vinh took two golds from the 20km walk races for women and men, respectively.
