Located about 185 kilometres off the southern coast of Vietnam, Con Dao island of Ho Chi Minh City is not only a tourist paradise famed for its pristine natural beauty but also the last refuge of Dugongs, endangered herbivorous marine mammals. Spending their entire life at sea and known as “sea cows” for their habit of grazing on sea grass, Dugongs are facing a high risk of extinction due to many threats from human activities and climate change. According to the Institute of Marine Research, dugong is listed as a vulnerable species in the 2023 Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). VNA/Photo by courtesy
