Northern, central regions cope with extreme cold weather

The northern and central regions have been experiencing an extreme cold spell as from January 7, pushing temperatures to even below 0 degree Celsius in high mountainous areas. The cold weather has been affecting local lives and production. Nearly 10,000 ha of rice, 19,195 ha of crops and vegetables in the northern mountainous provinces are damaged, almost 13,000 cattles and 44,000 birds dead. The hardest-hit localities include Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan and Lang Son northern provinces, with snow and frost appearing in various places. The north central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue are in the grip of biting cold, with the temperature dropping to 7-10 degrees Celsius at the lowest.
