Lam Dong targets sustainable sericulture sector

The Central Highlands province of Lam Dong currently has a total of 9,800 hectares of mulberry and about 16,000 sericulture farming households, or nearly 70 per cent of the country’s total according to the province’s ’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Lam Dong produces around 16,000 tonnes of silkworm cocoons a year to produce more than 2,000 tonnes of silk, or nearly 80 per cent of the country’s total silk production. Sericulture sector in the province annually employs more than 2,000 workers, and has improved significantly in technology since its decline in the 2000s. In the future, the province will take several measures to sustainably develop sericulture, including strengthening research and production of silkworm eggs and giving priority to switching to certified high-yield mulberry varieties.
