A Japanese pottery exhibition themed “Yakishime - Earth Metamorphosis” opened at the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi on April 4. The exhibition jointly organised by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam and the museum is among the activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relationship. The exhibition, which runs until April 20, introduces the ceramics technique yakishime which fires unglazed wares at high temperatures. Yakishime dates back to the fourth or fifth century. However, it was not until the 12th century through to the 17th century that the technique became firmly established and was used in a significant portion of the production of major ceramic centres in Japan, including Bizen, Shigaraki, and Tokoname.
