If the livers are equal with a healthy red colour, the family will be blessed with good luck. On the contrary, if the livers have scars, the family will encounter bad luck. VNA Photo: Xuân Tiến

The Ho Su Cha traditional festival of Ha Nhi ethnic group in Ka Lang and Thu Lum communes, Muong Te district in the northern province of Lai Chau is celebrated in eleventh lunar month, when people finish the harvest. The festival opens on the first day of the dragon in the month and often takes place from three to five days varying in each village. According to the Head of Thu Lum village, Chu Nhu Tu, his ethnic group celebrates the lunar New Year twice a year; each time is separated from the other by 13 days, equivalent to the 13 zodiac animal signs. Ha Nhi people’s zodiac cycle has one more animal sign - the Rabbit. The first Tet celebration is the New Year’s Eve party, when people slaughter a pig and make ‘banh day’ (round glutinous rice cake). The second celebration starts on the next dragon day, when Ha Nhi people officially enter the New Year. On the occasion, villagers cook chickens and ‘banh troi’ (floating rice cake) for their feast. The lunar New Year’s Eve party gathers all family members. During Tet, people extend their best wishes and luck for each other. They drop by each other’s house and treat the guests with feasts full of wine and meat. VNA Photo: Xuân Tiến
