Ha Giang boosts sustainable agriculture for high quality king oranges

Ha Giang province has more than 7,100 hectares growing king oranges across three districts: Bac Quang, Quang Binh, Vi Xuyen. During the harvest season of 2021-2022, growers harvested a total of 59,500 tonnes from 5,000 hectares of fruits, with a productive yield of approximately 119 tonnes/hectare. The northern province encouraged local orange growers to join co-operatives and grow fruit under Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP) standards. More farmers in Ha Giang province have begun using organic fertiliser and bio-products under the VietGAP standards. In the past, farmers used chemical fertilisers and pesticides to grow the fruit, but the practices had adverse impacts on the quality of fruit, soil and the environment. With the sustainable agriculture practices from VietGAP standards, farmers can protect themselves, the consumers, the local ecosystem and prevent soil and water pollution from excessive fertiliser and pesticide. Ha Giang province aims to export its high quality, organic king oranges to foreign markets like the US or Europe, further increasing values and promoting the popularity of the province’s oranges.
