Lai Vung district in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap is known as the “kingdom of pink oranges” in the region. The Lai Vung pink mandarin has only one harvest a year - just before Tet (Lunar New Year) - and is one of the favourite fruits during the festival because of its beautiful colour, thin skin, sweet and unique flavour and has very few seeds. The region currently has 220 hectares of pink mandarins, most of which are grown using organic farming methods. This year, unfavourable weather conditions reduced the fruit supply to just 2,000 - 2,500 tonnes, and farmers are hoping for a price of 30,000 - 40,000 VND per kilogram (1.23 - 1.64USD) for this year’s crop.
