Long Khanh A village in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has been in khan ran (scarf with checkered pattern) weaving business for more than a century. About a decade ago, the village went into a crisis when their scarfs were no longer popular, due to new imported scarfs with lighter fabric and colourful designs. The village’s artisans, however, refused to give up on their traditional craft, and reinvented their original black and white design of “khan ran” to include fashionable shades like: pink-white, red-black or blue-white. With this, the whole village was revitalized and “khan ran” once again reinstated its symbolic role of the Mekong Delta culture to tourists. VNA Photo: Chương Đài
