Pham Phao parish (Hai Anh commune, Ninh Binh province) is not only famous for the traditional wood carving and brass making craft, but is also considered the "cradle" of oil painting. Mr. Nghe, a 80-year-old painter in the village, remembered his uncle taught him how to paint in 1940. Since then, Mr. Nghe has honed his skills for oil painting, and has taught painting to local villagers. The parish currently has about 50 painters, most of whom have never been trained in painting but mainly learn from each other. The painters mainly paint oil paintings in a variety of genres such as portraits, landscapes, meditation paintings, among others.
