The Central Highland province of Dak Lak has micro-climate and soil condition that are suitable to grow cacao trees, with primary growing areas in Ea Kar, Krong Ana, Ea H’leo and Krong Pak districts that make a total of more than 2,000 hectares of cacao planting area. Each year, the province harvests an average yield of 100 kilograms/hectare, a low yield compared to other cocoa growing regions around the world. Dak Lak currently has five cocoa processing companies for export, with main products are fermented dry cocoa beans, a kind of raw product with low value for export. In order to reap greater benefits from local cocoa growing areas, Dak Lak province is investing in research for high-yield cocoa varieties, organising and improving the domestic cocoa supply chain.
