Nhi Khe woodturning craft village is located about 20 km south of Hanoi in Nhi Khe commune, with a 300-year-old history of manual woodturning traditional craft. Each craftsman hone their hands to become skillful for creating precise details in the woodwork. At the same time, they must have sharp eyes to help precisely turning wood to make products which are perfect in size and with fine details without a measure. In the past, the village was well-known for hand-turned wooden objects for use in religious activities and other wooden products, such as horn, bone, stone and clamshell items for decoration and daily use. Nowadays, Nhi Khe craftsmen have managed to diversify their products. Apart from traditional objects, the list of the craft village’s products now includes jewellery items made from wood, stone, wooden chessmen, wooden-bead mats and curtains, chopsticks, toothpick containers, and hangers which serve not only domestic demands but also export markets.
