Water hyacinth is an invasive species usually found on the channels and rivers of Vietnam, but the plants were transformed into useful products under the skillful hands of artisans in Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province. The long stems of water hyacinth, sometimes reach a metre long, are collected by the artisans, then dried and used to weave a range of products including: oval or round basket, rectangular storage bins or even tote bags. The handcrafted goods made from water hyacinths are popular in foreign countries like Japan, the US, Germany and Denmark, because of their crafted beauty, durability and eco-friendliness.
