Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on February 5 chaired a working session with the Commission for Management of State Capital at Enterprises (CMSC) and 19 groups and corporations under the commission's management to look into their production and business plans for 2024 and measures to promote socio-economic development investment in the year.

PM Chinh highlighted contributions from the 19 groups and corporations to the country’s overall success in 2023, but underlined that the country’s socio-economic development tasks for 2024 are much harder than those for 2023, requiring more efforts from ministries and sectors, including the CMSC. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked the Commission for Management of State Capital at Enterprises (CMSC) to build and implement future development strategies for State-owned groups and corporations under its management, with a view to better clarifying their role in leading, motivating and promoting the growth of other economic sectors.

Speaking at a working session with the commission and 19 groups and corporations under its management in Hanoi on February 5, PM Chinh instructed that the commission should focus on removing legal obstacles to create a favourable legal framework for the SOEs, while intensifying supervision and power control. Read full story

- Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s recent article provides objective assessments on the outcomes, achievements and experience that the Party and country have gained throughout historical periods, thus inspiring people’s pride in the Party, President Ho Chi Minh and the heroic Vietnamese nation, and reinforcing their confidence in the country’s path towards socialism, according to Dr. Nguyen Huu Cuong from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Cuong made the statement while commenting on the Party leader’s article entitled "Proud and confident under the Party's glorious flag, determined to build a Vietnam more prosperous, powerful, civilised, heroic with a fine and long-lasting culture," which was released on the occasion of the 94th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Read full story

- Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu and Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Nong Rong have shared their view on measures to materialise high-level common perceptions between the two countries.

During their talks in Ho Chi Minh City on February 4, the officials focused on how to concretise the joint statement on continuing to deepen and elevate the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, and to build a Vietnam-China community with a shared future that carries strategic significance. Read full story

- Nearly 500 Vietnamese people and Dutch friends gathered at a programme held recently by the Vietnamese Embassy in the Netherlands to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Speaking at the February 3 event, Ambassador Ngo Huong Nam briefed the participants on achievements Vietnam recorded in 2023, with the national gross domestic product (GDP) expanding by over 5% to more than 430 billion USD. Read full story

- The increasing inflow of remittances to Vietnam over the years has increased the foreign currency reserve while helping enterprises expand production and business, thus creating an impetus for socio-economic development, according to economists. Read full story

- Vietnam remained the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s third-largest trade partner for the second straight year in 2023, data showed. 

The RoK’s trade with Vietnam came to 79.43 billion USD last year, with exports shrinking 12.3% to 53.49 billion USD, according to the Korea International Trade Association (KITA). Read full story

- A drone light show expected to set a Southeast Asian record is scheduled to take place by the side of Ho Tay (West Lake) in Hanoi on the eve of the Year of the Dragon on February 9.

The show, with the participation of 2,024 drones, will be organised by the People’s Committee of Tay Ho district, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam), and the Vietnam Public Bank (PVcomBank) in celebration of the New Year, the district Party Committee said. Read full story

-  Weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh of Vietnam won a bronze in the men's 61kg category at the 2024 Asian Weightlifting Championship on February 4 in Uzbekistan, helping him earn more points for his Olympic place.

The category involved Ricko Saputra (Indonesia), Pak Myong Jin (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea), Ergashev Edkhamjon (Uzbekistan), Mirzayev Seyitjan (Turkmenistan), and Lee Hyeseong (the Republic of Korea), and Vietnamese athletes Trinh Van Vinh and Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan./. Read full story
