Hanoi, (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

-President Vo Van Thuong visited the central drilling rig of the Cuu Long Joint Operating Company (Cuu Long JOC), offering New Year wishes to its officials and engineers representing the 60,000-strong staff in the oil and gas industry, in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on January 26.

Since its establishment in 1998, the Cuu Long JOC has so far pumped up over 415 million barrels of oil, generating a total revenue of more than 30 billion USD. This outstanding performance has translated into a contribution of nearly 14 billion USD to the State budget, solidifying its standing as Vietnam's second largest oil contractor.Read full text

-Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 26 visited officers and soldiers of the Ministry of National Defence’s General Department for Defence Intelligence (General Department II), during which the PM asked them to be prepared to continue completing all assigned tasks in 2024 and following years.

-Vietnam will implement measures concertedly and drastically to promote thrift practice and wastefulness prevention this year, under a recently-issued government master programme.
The programme aims to maintain macro-economic stability, ensure major economic balances, and change both mindset and actions of officials, public servants, labourers, and people in thrift practice and wastefulness prevention.Read full text

-The Directive 25-CT/TW of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat marks a breakthrough in multilateral diplomacy, as this is the first time the Party has issued a comprehensive document outlining the trajectory for the entire political system in the field via long-term strategies, goals, and measures, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son.

-The surge in travel demand during Tet (Lunar New Year) is a favourable condition for diseases to spread, including COVID-19, a health official of Ho Chi Minh City has said.
Ho Chi Minh City's infectious disease surveillance system has detected the emergence of sub-variant JN.1 of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in hospitalised patients in December last year in the locality, Deputy Director of the municipal Centre for Disease Control (HCDC) Le Hong Nga said at a press briefing held on January 25.Read full text

-Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung has suggested the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries to strengthen connection and support ASEAN centres in China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (RoK) in tourism promotional activities.

He made the suggestion at the 23rd Meeting of ASEAN Plus Three Tourism Ministers on January 26, within the framework of the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 (ATF) which is taking place in Vientiane, Laos.Read full text
