Thanh Hoa (VNA) – Forest rangers in the central province of Thanh Hoa have detected around 5,300 muntjac individuals of two species Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis and Muntiacus rooseveltorum in the Pu Hu Nature Reserve, according to a 2022-2024 survey.

Do Ngoc Duong, Director of the nature reserve’s management board, said that the survey result shows that the locations where traces of muntjac species are spotted are far from residential areas and trails. Currently, these species are inhabiting at altitudes of 400-800 metres on mountain slopes, and quite close to water sources.

In the coming, the unit will continue surveying to define the number of muntjacs, and then put forward measures to preserve these rare species, stated Duong.

In addition, forest rangers will exert efforts to improve the awareness of local people and authorities of preserving muntjac species by providing information on boards, and via posters, leaflets, and a video clip./.
