HÀ NỘI — State employees have seven days off for the 2023 Lunar New Year celebration, starting on Friday, January 20, 2023, and ending Thursday, January 26, 2023.

According to an official letter that the Government Office sent to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister Vũ Đức Đam agrees with the ministry's proposal.

Cadres, civil servants, public employees and employees of administrative, non-business agencies, political organisations and socio-political organisations will have seven days off for the Tết (Lunar New Year) celebration.

In early September, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs gave two options for the New Year holiday. The first option was a seven-day break from January 20 to January 26, 2023.

In the second option, the holiday will span five days, but from January 21 (Saturday) to January 25 (Wednesday).

This option results in two additional days off for the following Thursday and Friday, plus the nearest weekends, so people would effectively enjoy a nine-day break.

After collecting feedback from ministries and agencies, the labour ministry proposed to the Prime Minister the first option, saying that a seven-day break is reasonable, not too long and people will have a number of days off before and after Tết, which creates favourable conditions for them to travel and prepare for the celebration.

Moreover, the first option was chosen by the majority of ministries and agencies.

For the National Day holiday, Deputy Prime Minister Đam approved the break from September 1 to September 4, 2023.

Đam requested agencies and units arrange staff reasonably during the holiday to handle work and serve people and organisations continuously.
