Then, an essential ritual practice in the spiritual life of the Tay, Nung, Thai ethnic groups in Viet Nam’s northwestern region, has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as intangible cultural heritage. Then is a unique kind of cultural practice combining rituals, music and songs in ceremonies of praying for good harvest, happiness, good health, long life, etc. During ceremonies, Then masters sing and play a handmade gourd lute called “dan tinh”, while presenting offerings to their deities.
