Custard apples, the staple fruit to grow in Chi Lang district of the northern mountainous province of Lang Son, are bringing bumper harvests to this hard-to-access land. Chi Lang district, about 120 km northeast of Hanoi, now owns 1,600 ha of custard apple trees, of which more than 195 ha are cultivated in accordance with organic cultivation standards such as VietGAP and Global GAP, yielding about 16,000 tonnes this year. Custard-apples in Chi Lang are famous because their tasty flavor and strange way of harvesting. Local people, mainly Nung ethnic ones, plant their custard-apple trees right on layers of rocks.
