Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The Middle Airports Authority (MAA) has pledged to launch a project to upgrade and expand the Phu Bai International Airport in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue in the second quarter of 2019, after having handed over nearly 46 hectares of cleared land to the project.

According to the MAA - the project’s investor, the last household in the project site has committed to move out before April 30.

The project has a total investment of 2.2 trillion VND (946 million USD), raising its serving capacity to about 5 million passengers per year.

Another terminal will be built with an area of 16,500 square metres, along with eight new aprons.

Currently, the airport has a capacity of serving 1.5 million passengers per year, but in 2018 it had to serve nearly 2 million, with an average growth of 15 percent per year.

Under the airport’s planning to 2020 with a vision to 2030, the second terminal was supposed to be constructed in 2015 and the third in 2018 to serve 5 million passengers per year and 2,000 passengers per hour in peak time. In 2020, the current terminal will be used to handle cargos.-VNA
