Hanoi calls for German investments in drainage, wastewater treatment

The Vietnam – Germany water sector forum in Hanoi saw German businesses learn about Hanoi’s demand for investment and introduce modern technologies suitable to the capital’s conditions.
Speaking at the forum, German Ambassador to Vietnam Christian Berger said his country once faced river and lake pollution like Vietnam.
To deal with the problem, it applied a series of measures, including wastewater discharge fee, water use standardisation and water source protection, he said, noting that to date, 82 percent of surveyed Germans are pleased with local tap water quality.
The diplomat stated Germany, housing hundreds of companies operating in wastewater management and treatment, is willing to support Hanoi and Vietnam in technology investment for environmental protection, wastewater treatment and clean water sources building.
He hoped the forum would connect Vietnamese and German businesses and help them learn about their markets’ demand for future investment and partnerships.
Hanoi has huge demand for clean water. The city is estimated to need some 2 million cubic metres (m3) of clean water per day by 2020, about 3 million and 3.5 million m3 per day by 2030 and 2050, respectively. It is striving to provide clean water for 100 percent of its rural population by 2020.-VNA
