Hanoi (VNA) - The transport sector aims to transport 8-9 percent more passengers and cargo this year compared to 2018, heard a conference in Hanoi on January 11.

According to Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong, the sector also aims to complete its public investment plan in the year with total estimated disbursement of nearly 29 trillion VND.

Additionally, more efforts will be made to minimise the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries by between 5-10 percent compared to 2018; and reduce traffic jams in big cities.

Dong said the ministry has devised various solutions to realise the targets, including completing and submitting to the Government a proposal on revisions to the Law on Road Traffic, and the assessment of the enforcement of the Law on Vietnam Civil Aviation.

It will focus on finalizing a project to restructure transport and enhance connectivity among different means of transport, increase the use of technology in managing transport and implement an action plan to improve the competitiveness of logistics services.

Meetings and dialogues with transport enterprises and cooperatives will be held, while the ministry will also devise measures to settle difficulties facing enterprises in the field.

Attention will be paid to the disbursement of capital for national key transport projects, and accelerating the implementation of urban railway, expressway and airport projects, especially the Long Thanh airport and the expansion of Tan Son Nhat airport in the southern region.

More efforts will be employed to handle problems in the process of collecting fees for build-operate-transfer (BOT) projects and speed up the implementation of non-stop automatic toll collection systems.-VNA
