HCM CITY — A music gala titled Hướng Về Biên Giới, Biển, Đảo Tổ Quốc (Towards the Country’s Borders, Seas and Islands) will be held on August 2 in HCM City to raise funds for soldiers and others living in border areas and islands.

The event is being organised by the HCM City’s Việt Nam Fatherland Front Committee and HCM City Television (HTV).

The show will present songs praising the country and its islands and seas, featuring veteran singers such as Thanh Thúy and Nguyễn Phi Hùng and young artist Võ Hạ Trâm, among others.

The programme will include a meeting with soldiers who patrol the country’s borders and seas.

Triệu Lệ Khánh, vice chairwoman of the city’s Việt Nam Fatherland Front Committee, said: “We are looking to raise VNĐ35 billion (US$1.5 million) this year to support the people and soldiers living and working in border areas and islands.”

The committee aims to bring clean water to seven border provinces, and build cultural houses on the Đá Nam Island in the Trường Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.

It also plans to build 60 houses for the needy and for soldiers who live and work near the border in northern mountainous provinces.

In 2017, the committee raised over VNĐ30 billion ($1.3 million), according to Khánh.

It has built a training room for the Submarine Brigade 189 of the Việt Nam People’s Navy, and has also brought clean water to five border provinces and provided a solar energy system for the Đắc Ơ Border Post in Bình Phước Province’s Bù Gia Mập District.

The music gala will take place at 7:30pm at the HTV Theatre and will be broadcast live on HTV1 and HTV9. — VNS
