Drug trafficker nabbed in Điện Biên

ĐIỆN BIÊN — Border guards in northern province of Điện Biên found a woman transporting about 3.5kg of heroin and 5kg of synthetic drugs on Wednesday.

Border guards found 10 bricks of heroin weighing about 3.5kg, 150 bags containing about 30,000 crystal methamphetamine tablets and five other bags containing 5kg of synthetic drugs.

The drugs were hidden in paper boxes wrapped with plastic bags. The alleged trafficker Lò Thị Bun, 36, residing in Pa Xa Lào Hamlet, Pa Thơm Commune in the province told border guards she received the drugs from a Lao national and she was on the way to transfer the drugs to a person in Lai Châu Province.

The case is under investigation.

Việt Nam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.

The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death. — VNS
