HCM CITY — The HCM City Communist Youth Union’s 12th Hành quân xanh (Green March) Volunteer campaign kicked off yesterday in HCM City.

Members of the Hồ Chí Minh  Communist Youth Union in the armed forces and Fire-Fighting and Prevention Police Department are volunteering for activities that contribute to the social development of the city.

The HCM City summer campaign includes youth union members and young adults from organisations such as Việt Nam Border Defence Force, HCM City Fire Fighting and Prevention Police Department, and police departments from all over HCM City.

The campaign, which has around 18,000 members, will conclude on August 12.

Doãn Trường Quang, commander of the 12th Hành quân xanh Volunteer campaign, said the campaign provides members with opportunities to use their skills for the development of the city and promote the image of young adults helping the unfortunate.

“The passion of youth is instrumental to the country’s development,” said Võ Hoài Bảo, secretary of the Communist Youth Union – District 9 Police during the opening ceremony.

After the ceremony, the campaign members made presentations on fire safety skills, presented fire extinguishers to apartment buildings, visited the elderly and disabled households to help them acquire ID cards, and taught self-defence techniques to students and women.

The campaign will hold more activities such as presentations on traffic safety and crime prevention in schools and workplaces, as well as fire drills, and swimming and self-defence lessons.

“Our activities focus on issues that citizens are concerned about, such as fire safety in high-rise apartment buildings and self-defence against assailants,” Quang said.

There will also be educational programmes in which students can experience being a member of the police or firefighting police for a day.

Đặng Văn An, a member of the HCM City Communist Youth Union and Fire Fighting and Prevention Police Department, said: “This is a very meaningful campaign because I can help spread awareness of important issues such as fire safety and take part in charitable acts for the local community.” — VNS
