HCM City (VNA) - Local authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap will ban fishing in the breeding season from May to June to protect aquatic resources in the locality.

The move aims to protec the natural aquaculture areas for the future as said by a resident in An Binh A commune.

“Dong Thap has tangled canal systems with plenty of natural food, so fish can grow and develop faster there than in other places,” Nguyen Van Tung added.

A report from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that illegal fishing using explosives and electrical shocks is still going on.

In addition, the aquatic ecosystem and natural breeding grounds are affected by boats engaging in illegal activities on the water.

The boats are also causing pollution.

The provincial People’s Committee said it would raise public awareness among residents about the importance of keeping these aquaculture areas free of waste and illegal activities.-VNA
