Hanoi (VNA) – More than 7.5 billion VND (about 330,000 USD) were mobilised in a programme to support women in disadvantaged border communes, heard a press briefing held by the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) Central Committee in Hanoi on June 14.

Of the sum, total donations made through a text message campaign were over 1.4 billion VND (61,400 USD), from more than 71,200 text messages to phone number 1409.

The programme, which runs until 2020, aims to encourage women’s development and calls for support of the community, especially women’s associations at all levels and border guard forces across the country.

To date, it has provided support for 97 disadvantaged border communes, along with additional aid for several communes in Bac Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Dien Bien, Hanoi and Khanh Hoa. It is expected to assist 14 livelihoods models of poor women in 14 communes in the coming time.

Notably, the southern province of Tay Ninh has raised over 2 billion VND to realise the programme’s targets at its extremely disadvantaged border localities.

Meanwhile, the VWU Central Committee also presented 90 bookcases worth 405 million VND to 90 communes nationwide and mobilised nearly 650 million VND for Xin Cai commune in Ha Giang province’s Meo Vac district.

Besides, the VWU Central Committee has signed a collaboration programme with the Vietnam Red Cross Society to implement social and humanitarian activities in 2018-2020.

It has also joined hands with the National Humanitarian Portal 1400 to launch a text message for the programme. In June, the committee and other agencies held a training course on the programme’s implementation for more than 200 individuals.-VNA
