Closer ties between Việt Nam and Japan sought: President

HÀ NỘI — President Trần Đại Quang has called for more exchanges in legislation practices between Việt Nam’s National Assembly and Japan’s House of Representatives.

President Quang made the request during talks today with Chairman of lower house of Japan’s National Diet Tadamori Oshima, as part of his official visit.

He expressed his delight at the robust and comprehensive development of Việt Nam – Japan relations, including recent positive parliamentary activities such as co-operation on multilateral forums and exchanges among the two countries’ representatives, especially female and young reps.

President Quang reiterated Việt Nam’s appreciation for long-term in-depth co-operation with Japan and regarded the country as among its most important partners.

President Quang asked Japan’s lower house for further co-operation and support for each other in regional and international forum such as the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

He also asked the legislative body to back up the Japanese Government’s continuing support for Việt Nam’s socio-economic development and restructuring via Official Development Assistance (ODA).

Chairman Tadamori Oshima expressed his pleasure at receiving the Vietnamese leaders and delegation. He also shared his good impressions of Việt Nam’s growth and achievements after his official visit to the country last year.

As Chairman of Japan’s House of Representatives, he was personally committed to nurturing the development of relationships between the two countries.

Chairman Tadamori agreed the two countries’ legislative bodies should continue to conduct more exchanges and co-operation activities, especially between young lawmakers, which would serve to maintain political trust and further ties between the two sides in various areas from trade and investment, health, security and defence to education and culture.

Boosted co-operation

The same day, President Trần Đại Quang also received President of the Japan-Việt Nam Parliamentary Friendship Alliance Toshihiro Nikai in Tokyo, where the two expressed delight at the prospect of bilateral relations.

President Quang suggested building the Việt Nam - Japan University into a leading education facility providing high-quality human resources for Việt Nam and other countries in the region.

Toshihiro Nikai, who is also Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party, said his alliance would spare no efforts to promote the two countries’ cooperative relations in a more pragmatic manner in the time ahead, especially in delegation exchanges, investment, trade and human resources training.

President Quang also met Chairman of Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) Shinichi Kitaoka today, where he thanked Japan for many projects over the years that contribute significantly to Việt Nam’s socio-economic development.

President Quang said as Việt Nam was undergoing economic restructuring, it would need Japan’s help in balancing economic development and environmental protection and ensuring social security.

President Quang also asked that Japan continues to provide development support for Việt Nam, especially in major infrastructure projects and national human resources development schemes.

For his part, JICA Chairman Shinichi confirmed the organisation’s full support for growing ties between the two countries, especially in helping Việt Nam improve value-added rate in industrial products, climate change adaptation programmes, and human resources development.

Also today, Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Sen. Lieut. Gen. Tô Lâm held talks with Hachiro Okonogi, Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission of Japan, on the sidelines of President Quang’s visit, where the officials also touched on increasing the exchange of experts in specific areas in the coming time to maintain national security and social order and safety in both countries. — VNS
